Future proof — Raffaella Mulas on the way to Amsterdam

The next step in her scientific career will take our group leader Raffaella Mulas to the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, where she has been appointed Assistant Professor of Applied Mathematics. Congratulations and all the best for the future!

In her new position in Amsterdam, Raffaella Mulas will continue to explore the mathematics of network science, with a focus on the spectral theory of graphs and hypergraphs, from both a mathematical and an applied perspective. She started working on this theory during her PhD at our Max Planck Institute, which she completed in 2020 under the supervision of Jürgen Jost. She started working on the applications during her postdoctoral stay at the Alan Turing Institute of London (2020–2021). In 2021, Raffaella returned to our institute as a Minerva group leader. Her group focuses on discrete spectral theory.

She will continue to visit the Institute on a semi-regular basis for at least two years, as the other members of her current research group will remain in Leipzig. Raffaella plans to continue cooperating with her main collaborators from our MPI MiS, TUM Munich, Peking University, and the Alan Turing Institute, as well as to expand her collaborative network in the Netherlands, where she already has several co-authors. Her new position is due to become permanent in a year's time, so she may well be staying in Amsterdam for a long time!
